Argentina's history is divided up into 4 different sections by historians: the pre-Columbian era/early history (up to 16th century), the Colonial period (1530-1810), the Nation-building period (1810-1880), and the History of Modern Argentina (from around 1880+). The pre-Columbian era was sparsely populated until European colonization. The first traces of human life date back to the Paleolithic period. Europeans first arrived in Argentina in 1502 by Amerigo Vespucci. Juan Díaz de Solís, a navigator, arrived in Argentina in 1516. The, in 1536, Pedro de Mendoza established a small settlement in the area that became Buenos Aires. The small settlement was abandoned in 1541. Another settlement was established in 1580 by Juan de Garay. Later, the British invaded the cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo in 1806-1807, but failed. After the beginning of the Peninsula War in Spain, the Spanish king Ferdinand VII got captured by Napoleon. It was considered that without a King, the people should rule themselves and the people in Argentina started to rebel against the government ruled by Spain. This started the May Revolution of 1810. As the war ceased to an end, Argentina won independence and the United Kingdom officially recognized Argentine independence in 1825 and signed a treaty with the new country. After the its independence, Argentina faced many Civil Wars about the organization of the country which also affected its literature. Following the wars that nearly tore Argentina apart, the country had many relationships with other countries.
